How Interim Ministry Works in the United Methodist Church

Do United Methodists use Interim Ministers?

Sure. Since 1996 Interim Ministry as been an appointed approved by the Discipline—either as mid-year appointments until Annual Conference or in multi-year settings badly in need of transformation. Look for a description of the kinds of places trained Interim Ministers are used.

A Vision for Interim Ministry in the United Methodist Church

The Discipline, paragraph 338.3 authorizes the appointment of Interim Ministers. These “specialists” can make a great impact in troubled churches. Here is a plan for training pastors for this specialized ministry, developed by the Intentional Growth Center.

Weary: “I grow weary in Thy work, Lord, but not of it.”

George Whitefield said it first, but many echo that sentiment in every generation.

Interim Ministry invites the veteran pastor to have breaks in his/her service to the church but still be available to lead congregations in some of their most critical moments.

Itineracy in the United Methodist Church

The plan of deploying pastors in a succession of churches is unique to United Methodists. Some stay many years, some few. Pastors trained in the specialized work of Interim Ministry may serve many churches at a timely moment in that church’s life.
